In times of hardship, coming together is more important than ever, a reminder that even in darkness, we find strength in one another. This Ramadan, we stand in solidarity with those facing unimaginable loss. ...

Last week, with the support of our team, some of our Community Volunteers attended a job fair in Mytilini—an event organized by the municipality, the Hoteliers Association, and the Caterers’ Association of Lesvos. With over 60 employers present, the fair focused on opportunities in the tourism and hospitality sectors, and our volunteers made the most of it.

Four of our Community Volunteers took part, each leaving with at least five job contacts, and some with up to eight promising leads. One has already secured and completed a job interview!

Breaking down barriers to employment is a core pillar of what we do. Through training and employment programs, such as our Barista program, we are committed to equipping people with the tools and knowledge that open doors to the labor market. By fostering skill-building initiatives and career pathways we are committed to setting our community up for success and giving them the chance to build their own futures.

An unaccompanied minor shared these words on what Ramadan means to him at an iftar dinner we organised earlier this week.

The iftar was held after a training session for the young men that will receive their own independent housing soon. In the training they learnt about where to ask for help when you live alone and their rights as a tenant. After the sunset we broke the fast together.

Last week, our community in Athens gathered for the first of many iftar dinners, coming together across cultures and backgrounds to share a meal, a tradition, and a moment of connection. While some broke their fast, others joined in the spirit of unity, and shared reflection and gratitude. Each week, the iftar will feature a different cuisine, honoring the rich heritage of our residents.

In times of displacement and hardship, sharing food is an act of love, and gathering is an act of peace. Together, we find unity in our differences and strength in our shared humanity.

It’s been a month since we expanded the Green Zone in Lesvos, and thanks to the dedication of our community volunteers, real progress is taking shape! ✨

🏡 Our newly built Green Zone office is now fully up and running—a central space for residents and volunteers to gather, connect, and lead community-driven projects.

☀️ To make the space even more welcoming, our team has been constructing a shaded gathering area, providing much-needed comfort for those spending time here.

🌱 But that’s not all! We just launched a gardening project—our CVs are preparing the ground to plant flowers and greenery around the office, bringing more life and color to the zone. A true community garden in the making!

🛠️ Meanwhile, just like in our main office, residents and CVs have been busy with painting, construction, and tech work—putting their skills to use and creating new projects. And of course, our community volunteers continue to run the food line, handing out meals to their fellow peers.

This is what Camp to CampUs looks like in action—enabling people to build, create, and take ownership of their environment. 💪💛

Today, on #internationalwomensday , we recognize the strength, resilience, and contributions of displaced women around the world. Yet, at the current rate of progress, gender parity won’t be reached until 2158—more than a century from now. That’s why this year’s theme, #AccelerateAction, is a call to do more.

At Movement On The Ground, we are committed to creating safe spaces, education opportunities, and pathways to independence for displaced women. Whether through our women-only spaces and programs in Lesvos or our Digital Livelihood Academy in Lebanon, we are working to break barriers and create opportunities.

But we can’t do it alone. This International Women’s Day, let’s not forget displaced women. Let’s stand with them, support them, and ensure they are not left behind.

Our Baklava Bake Off Challenge is in full swing! 🍯✨

In just a few days, our incredible team in Lesvos has already baked 1000 baklavas—made with the dedication of our community volunteers and the support of a local bakery. Each evening, these baklavas are shared during Iftar, as our office spaces transform into welcoming gathering points where residents can break their fast together, enjoy dates and tea, and savor a sweet taste of home.

But our work doesn’t stop here. This week also marks the start of Ramadan for displaced people in Athens, unaccompanied minors in the Netherlands, and communities in Lebanon, Gaza, and Syria. They, too, deserve a moment of comfort, a shared meal, and the feeling of being seen and supported.

Right now, thousands of families from Zamzam camp in Sudan—once home to nearly half a million displaced people—are fleeing to the nearest city, seeking safety. Many are left sleeping on the streets, under trees, with little to no support.

For us, this crisis hits close to home. @munir_bassi our long-time and deeply dedicated Lesvos coordinator, has been witnessing this tragedy firsthand through his brother, who lives in the area. Determined to make a difference, they have established their own NGO, Let’s Have Hope, and together with Movement On The Ground, they are working tirelessly to provide urgent relief.

Today, we are proud to support their first delivery—40 families receiving Ramadan packages, dignity kits, and food essentials. But this is just the beginning.

EgeriaDo is supporting us in turning ‘The Movement Academy’ into a self-sustaining venture!

The Movement Academy is our new program designed to train social workers, humanitarians, and civil servants into community builders.

Over the last decade we have seen that top-down approaches make for a system that reinforces dependency on ‘carer’ roles, which overlooks the potential of residents to lead themselves. Our methodology, ‘Camp-To-CampUs’ offers a fresh perspective, as we firmly believe that asylum seekers integrate best when they can help each other.

Thank you to EgeriaDo for taking the time to understand a complex issue such as integration and believing in our vision for systemic change. We are so excited to continue building on this very valuable partnership together.
