Our Work in Lesvos

Transforming Camps into Communities Since 2015

In 2015, the Greek island of Lesvos became the epicenter of Europe’s refugee crisis, with over 500,000 refugees arriving in a matter of months. Movement On The Ground was founded here during this pivotal moment, and since then, Lesvos has been at the heart of our mission to transform refugee camps into communities.

Our innovative Camp to CampUs methodology, which began in Lesvos, integrates safety, security, and community-building to enhance the quality of life for residents. This approach includes providing access to education, vocational training, and social activities, all aimed at fostering self-reliance and integration. A cornerstone of this methodology is the active involvement of Community Volunteers, who are essential to the success of many of our programs. By participating in and leading initiatives such as skills-based trainings, sports, and social events, residents gain a sense of autonomy and ownership over their environment.

Why Lesvos Matters

Lesvos is where our journey began, and it remains a vital hub for our mission to turn crisis zones into thriving communities. The island serves as a powerful example of how a community-driven, holistic approach can transform the lives of displaced people, restoring dignity and fostering resilience. Our programs on Lesvos aim to build self-reliance, promote integration, and create opportunities that not only address immediate needs but also pave the way for sustainable, long-term growth. By focusing on education, vocational training, and active community involvement, we help residents regain agency, ownership and create a sense of belonging, ensuring that they have the tools and support needed to thrive.

Training & Employment

Education Programs:

Education is vital for both integration and personal growth. On Lesvos, we provide:

  • English Classes: Classes for all skill levels, taught by both Community Volunteers and Visiting Volunteers.
  • Digital Literacy: Offering resources for self-study, online Greek courses, and access to the KIRON platform.

Skills-based trainings:

In collaboration with local Greeks and Community Volunteers, we offer practical vocational skills and opportunities for residents to contribute actively to their community:

  • Barista Training: Focused on hard and soft skills for future employment.
  • Tailoring Workshops: Upcycling and tailoring sessions with local designers.
  • Barber and Tailor Services: Helping residents with personal needs.
  • Info Desk: A central hub where residents can learn about our programs and register to become Community Volunteers. Through this initiative, residents can join and even run programs.

A Sense of Belonging

Recreational activties are essential to creating spaces for relaxation, connection, and community-building, here are some of what we offer:

  • Chai Point: A welcoming social space offering free warm beverages. This hub serves as a place for residents and volunteers to relax, connect, and build relationships.
  • Social Spaces: In addition to Chai Point, we provide areas where camp residents and volunteers can gather for various activities.
  • Children’s Sports: Activities for children and teens.
  • Basketball for Adults: Sessions aimed at fostering teamwork and fitness.
  • Greek School Sports: Activities for younger children in collaboration with local schools.
  • Women’s Space: A dedicated area for women to relax, build community, and engage in creative expression, including pottery classes held in collaboration with a partner NGO.

Meet some of our community volunteers

Meet Jean: A True Community Leader
Jean, originally from Haiti, has been an integral part of our Lesvos community for nearly three years. Starting as a community resident in our programs, Jean grew into a dedicated leader who embodied the spirit of our Camp to CampUs philosophy.

During his time with us, Jean led the Chai Point team, coached football to inspire young residents, cooked meals for volunteer events, and was always ready to lend a helping hand. His passion, hard work, and kindness have left an unforgettable impact on our community.

As Jean moves on to his next chapter, we celebrate his remarkable contributions and wish him every success ahead. Thank you, Jean—you will always be a cherished part of our Movement family!

Meet Mohanned:

Mohanned, a professional barber from Syria, arrived in Lesvos just three months ago—but in that short time, he has become an essential part of our community.

Every day, you’ll find him at the info desk, helping residents book haircuts, tailor appointments, and navigate daily life in the camp. Beyond his skills with a pair of scissors, Mohanned also steps in as an interpreter, bridging the gap between volunteers and residents, ensuring that everyone feels heard and supported.

When asked why he volunteers, Mohanned shared: “I love helping people, and the Movement gave me the opportunity.” 💙

Meet Huseyin: A Dedicated Volunteer and Advocate for Change

Huseyin, originally from Syria, joined our community in Lesvos as a resident, quickly becoming an invaluable volunteer. At just 20 years old, he has become a proactive and essential part of the Movement On The Ground family.

Each week, Huseyin leads sports classes for children, inspiring teamwork, joy, and positivity on the field. His infectious energy and commitment make him a beloved figure within the camp, always ready to lend a hand or provide support wherever it’s needed.

Beyond coaching, Huseyin also channels his passion for social media to spotlight the impactful work happening within the community, sharing stories that highlight the resilience and strength of his peers.
